STRYI

ENABLE DHC Overview: Stryi is located in Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, and has a population of approximately 60.000 inhabitants. It is an important logistics hub in the region, and one of the main cities in Western Ukraine. Current DH system: The network is well-established in the city, with more than 50 years of operation, and serves a large percentage of the city. Currently, the majority of the customers are individual households (73%), followed by public buildings (26%), and other customers (1%). The system relies heavily on fossil fuels, with biomass playing a minor role in heat generation. What work will ENABLE DHC do: The project will develop plans to fully decarbonise the grid in Stryi and make it EED-ready. Today, 90% of the heat comes from burning natural gas, but ENABLE DHC will investigate ways to reduce GHG emissions and incorporate renewable fuels into the systems in Stryi, especially biomass. The use of heat pumps and combined heat and power (CHP) will also be studied as alternatives to fossil fuels and to help flexibilise the energy sources going into the network.
